Britannia Monographs Notes for Contributors

The Britannia Monograph Series

1.  The aim of the Britannia  Monograph Series is to publish works of definitive or substantial importance to the study of Roman Britain.  Such works may contain technical material which deserves to be presented in full, such as final reports on excavations and their finds, and discussions and catalogues of specific classes of archaeological material..  It is anticipated that for excavations, Britannia Monographs will only consider publications of sites which are expected to be regarded as type sites.

2.  If the Britannia Monographs Editor and Editorial Committee feel that a volume may fulfil the criteria, then they may encourage a submission.  The submission must take the form of a final or near-final manuscript of the work, both text and artwork. The Monographs Editor will ask the Roman Society Publications Secretary to secure an estimate of cost and complexity, and permission will be sought from the Editorial Committee, or the key officers thereof, to indicate whether financial and time constraints are likely to permit the volume to be included in the series. The Society would not expect to produce more than one monograph in any given year.

3.  The Britannia Monographs Editor will seek an independent review of the work from a reviewer, who will be specifically asked to comment on the quality and importance of the submission. In the case of manuscripts for which grants towards printing and editorial costs may be expected from English Heritage, Cadw or Historic Scotland, the reviewer may by agreement act for both the Roman Society and the potential funding institution.

4.  Authors will be informed of this process, and also that any final submission must conform to the requests of the Britannia Monographs Editor and the Roman Society Publications Secretary; that print-run, price and other aspects are at the discretion of the Society; and that publication will not be agreed without a final reviewer’s report on the final manuscript and final financial scrutiny.  Authors will be required to sign a licence to publish, and will be wholly responsible for securing any relevant permissions, including from all contributing authors.  Furthermore, the timescale of publication will be determined by the Roman Society Editorial Committee and will be without detriment to the publication of the Journal of Roman Studies and Britannia.

5.  Authors will be encouraged to seek funding for the publication of their work, and should indicate the financial position at the time when the manuscript is first discussed with the Britannia Monographs Editor. It is not the intention of the Society to subsidise publication of Monographs except by underwriting the production costs.
