Professor Simon Elliott FSA: Roman Britain's Missing Legion

Legio IX Hispana had a long and active history, later founding Leicester, Lincoln and York. From the latter it guarded the northern frontiers in Britain. But the last evidence for its existence in Britain dates to AD 108. It then disappears from the written record. The mystery of its disappearance has inspired debate and imagination for decades. Here Dr Simon Elliott FSA discusses the various theories used to explain its unknown fate, and additionally provides detail of its activities in the East Midlands in the later AD 40s.
